Susie Hunt is a painter and painting tutor working with predominantly water based media. She teaches and paints mainly in her studio near Kemnay, which is where she lives, next to the banks of the River Don.
She floats through a variety of subject and media, is blown from landscape to seascape and draws on interaction and dialogue with people she meets along the way. Wild and Garden flowers, particularly those she has grown herself are a consistent subject for painting. But also landscape that features water, be it rivers or ponds, lakes or sea. Water reflects the light from the sky into the land, uplifting and thoughtful.
She is presently immersed in the theme of swimming – appropriately using mainly watercolour, but also exploring the potential of Collagraph. ‘I have barely scratched the tip of the iceberg that is collagraph – this printing process has the most painterly possibilities and delights the exponent with some irresistible and unexpected results’
Many of our routine and regular life tasks take us some little way out of our comfortable places and require strength of will, whether it be to dive into deep water, to navigate new pathways on the Internet or to catch a bus.
The landscape can be beautiful and benign, but a change in weather or a lost path can change the mood quite simply and subtly from comfortable to edgy, or even scary and challenging.
In the course of tutoring different techniques Susie practices a variety of methods and some of these are visible in her work. Combining Monoprint with Watercolour and sometimes Acrylic, collage, drawing and straight paint.
She has work in Aberdeen College collection, Grampian Hospitals Arts Trust collection, Wallacespace London collection.
WATER COLOUR HEAVEN
Five days of water colour painting in Tuscany…in the early summer….with like minded people….with an experienced tutor and coach…..HEAVEN….Water Colour Heaven.
Susie Hunt is a very experienced and competent water colour artist. She first came to Quattro Archi as an artist in residence and led a relaxed water colour art retreat. Now she returns to lead another retreat and participate in our summer exhibition. Here she lays out her plans for the 5 days of water colour work:
Quattro Archi Barga has everything we need to explore the
magic and fun of painting with watercolours. Located near the summit of a charming Italian hill town, with views of far off mountains and valleys, narrow cobbled walkways and alleyways, arches and cypress trees. A cool well equipped studio - workspaces and refreshments.
I will structure the week for all levels with instruction on techniques and applications, allowing plenty of time to sketch, paint and experiment. I can adjust the tuition to complement your personal level and way of working.
There are a multitude of effects presented to us when using this versatile and delightful medium. My mantra is ‘Water is my friend’ with water, the colour has room to flow and create planned or chaotic accidental effects. With dryer medium we can control and render fine detail. We can combine watercolour with some other materials to learn, surprise and delight ourselves and others. I will lead you along the paths and roadways of Barga and give you
good guidance in the heavenly possibilities of Water.
The retreat will focus on outdoor inspiration both landscapes and architectural in the old town. We also have full access to the studio with its facilities (not only water colour). I spend time sketching and observing the environment. The studio at Quattro Archi Barga provides a cool and comfortable space to collate these observations and work on with confidence.
On the last evening there is the opportunity to put on a mini pop-up show open to the public, something which our students have always found great fun.
