About the Course

Learn to make several different types of binding and if you wish, print your own unique papers and then use them to create your own Artist's Book......or just go straight in to the Artist's Book....a structured course with options.

This course is modular so there is flexibility to focus on several different types of binding or just a couple and develop those into your very own unique Artist's Book.

The program includes an introduction to the materials and the tools needed for binding. We are going to understand the different characteristics of the paper (size, weight and grain direction), how to fold it, trim it, and how to create different sections. We are going to play with an antique technique of three-dimensional glue decoration of the paper, that we are then going to use to create our hard covers.

We will see the differences between folded and sewn bindings.

We will begin with different techniques of pamphlet sewing, the creation of accordion books (a structure mostly used as an artist's book, but not only) and the construction of hard covers. Then you will learn the basic Japanese stitching, and we will teach you how to invent your own sewing design.

To introduce the concept of an "album", a specific binding technique will be shown that allows you to add photos, prints or other materials to the book. Afterwards you will learn how to create the ancient Coptic binding technique with its exposed chain stitching.

Once you have acquired these skills, you will learn the classical multi-section case binding with French link stitch, transforming simple sheets of paper into a hardcover book, created entirely with your own hands: from the sections, to the sewing, gluing, creation of hand-embroidered headbands, to the covers and finally to the assembly.

The course is lead by Victoria Bucca from Toi Rilegatura, an Argentinian bookbinder, based in Florence. Language: English (teacher is also fluent in Italian or Spanish, if needed, but the workshop is in English)

Typical schedule for the bookbinding workshop:
Day 1 Arrive 16.00 (4 pm). Settle in. Aperitif. Presentation and introductory talk
Day 2 Sewing 4 different types of pamphlet. Japanese bookbinding
Day 3 Paper glue decoration. Accordion hardcover bookbinding
Day 4 Coptic bookbinding. Catchup and personal projects in the studio
Day 5 Creating your photo album
Day 6 Flat-back case binding. French sewing. Ribbon. Embroidered headbands. Bodonian covers. Exhibition
Day 7 Depart after breakfast with your collection of handmade books

For those focusing on the Artist's Book, we start with an introduction to Artist Books, so that students can understand the possibilities, and how to think of their art work as a book. After this introduction, they should think about a concept and how this will be incorporated into both printing of the papers and construction of the book. They will work with the printmaker to prepare their own design of paper. Then we are going to think about the sequence and assembly of everything into a book using one unique bookbinding structure. Then finally realising all the imagination in your very own unique Artist Book to take home.

Victoria Bucca & Jane Richardson

The course is led by both Victoria Bucca (Bookbinder) and Jane Richardson (Printmaker).
Victoria Bucca (Toi) is Argentinian, but she moved to Italy in 2015. She studied graphic design at the University of Buenos Aires. She discovered the world of bookbinding thanks to the university, in 2013, and since then she has never stopped studying and training in the field. In 2022 she completed a master's degree (online) in Book Art at the Universidad Nacional de las Artes (Buenos Aires). She works as a graphic coordinator, bookbinder and bookbinding teacher. Her activity as “Toi Rilegatura” has opened the doors to different institutions, associations and cultural centers in Florence and Prato where she has been teaching courses since 2016. In 2019 she participated, on behalf of the Istituto de' Bardi, in the International Craft Exhibition with two Long Stitch bookbinding workshops.
Jane Richardson. Printmaker, artist, educator, enthusiast. Jane has devoted her career to helping people develop their creative skills in painting and particularly printmaking. Her focus is on encouraging and teaching people, but she does find time to produce her own work and has successfully exhibited work at Peacock, Aberdeen Artists, Quattro Archi and this year at Printmakers of Scotland in Stirling. Originally from the Liverpool area, her degree was in Graphic Design at Leeds.
