The Art of Bookbinding: A Step-By-Step Workshop Guide for Beginners in 59 seconds

Here is a really great bookbinding video. I asked Victoria, our bookbinding specialist, for some more information to make available to interested people because the Christmas holidays are often when people start to think about their plans for next summer. Let's face it, when it's cold, wet, and dark, we all need something to cheer us up. So, here is Victoria's 59-second video on bookbinding.

If you fancy having a go, we have two courses at the end of August and the beginning of September (still lovely weather and perhaps a shade cooler). The first is pure bookbinding, and I think you can expect to make (and take home) nine different types of bindings/books. The second is a collaboration with Jane Richardson (print specialist) and will help you create an Artist's Book. First, you will print your own papers and then select other ready-made paper to bind into your own very personal, very cool Artist's Book.

If you are still a little unsure about what an Artist's Book is, there's quite a lot of background on Wikipedia. In essence, it's a sort of book-shaped, usable paper sculpture with pages that you create from your favorite materials and images. Often credited with defining the modern artist's book, Dieter Roth (1930–98) produced a series of works that systematically deconstructed the form of the book throughout the fifties and sixties. These disrupted the codex's authority by creating books with holes in them (e.g., Picture Book, 1957), allowing the viewer to see more than one page at the same time. Roth was also the first artist to reuse found books—comic books, printer's end papers, and newspapers (such as Daily Mirror, 1961, and AC, 1964).

Anyway, here is Victoria's video. If you're interested, get in touch.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you need any further assistance.
